LIFE helped and initiated the setups of an ecological solid waste management in the La Salle Schools in Luzon through conducting a workshop last October 2005. The said workshop discussed the different concerns of the schools re solid waste management, identified the different banned materials and policies that need to be implemented, and the plans for SY 2005-2006.

An Ecological Solid Waste Management Committee was also formed. The said committee coordinates with LIFE re various activities implemented in the La Salle Schools in Luzon. Some of the major projects and accomplishments of the committee are as follows:

  • regular quarterly and other special meetings/ planning sessions held in the campus of the different committee members;
  • consolidation of the different reports of the various campuses;
  • visit to the existing Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF)/Waste Disposal Sites of the different campuses;
  • creation and reinforcement of multi-sectoral sub-committees on Ecological Solid Waste in various campuses; and
  • characterization and monitoring of solid waste volume.

Different campaigns for waste segregation were also and continue to be reinforced to different schools. The campaigns focus more on waste minimization, creation of guidelines pertaining to proper waste management, education and training of the academic community, reducing residual waste volume, and improving the income generated out of the recyclable materials.
