Above is the community profile map of Barangay Wawa, Lumban, Laguna.  This profile map shows data layers such as land use, housing units, and home industries, among others.  On the left side of the Figure are the different legends that make the profile map easier to understand by the community.  As an example, because of the detailed information which showed the locations of inhabited houses, locations of the piggery home industry, and water supply being hand pumped, the reported frequency of diarrhea was easily explained and understood.

Additionally, this profile map provides the benchmark for use in the community’s effort to do natural resources management planning.

Of particular interest in the previous two figures of Baragays Segunda Pulo and Balimbingan, Lumban, Laguna is the information about the drainage flow in the community.  Absent this detailed information, the community would have overestimated its contribution of pollution loading to the Pagsanjan River. This drainage data layer shows that not all pollutants from the community are directed towards the river.  Some of it flows through other directions.

Above are some of the profiling activities conducted in the province of Lumban, Laguna.  Community volunteers were taught to use a simple combination of compass, meter tape, and GPS (global positioning system).  They apply this knowledge themselves by actively participating in the gathering of barangay information. This “empowerment” of community folks has been a most welcome benefit of the profiling activity.
